purple probiotic face mask
as much as i love living in new york, the weather and the air have messed with my skin big time, especially after the icy cold winter months, windy dry air and pollution. now that spring is here, i've been trying to get my skin back to a better place. lately, i've been making this probiotic mask with wild organic blueberries. it's so calming and moisturizing and my face feels so smooth and plump afterwards. i'll make a batch big enough for about 3 masks and keep the leftovers in a jar in the fridge.
the benefits of probiotics for the skin are that they block the skin from harmful micro-biomes that cause inflammation and acne. applying probiotics topically also produces antimicrobial peptides, which act like natural antibiotics that kill off harmful bugs—we’re especially exposed to those during winter. they can also soothe inflammation, guard against oxidative stress and free radicals, and protect your skin from the dangers and anti-aging effects of pollution, including fine lines and dark spots.
other benefits from this mask include lactic acid from the yogurt which help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, dissolve dead skin cells (i swear i can feel this happening every time i use it) and tightens pores. i also add antioxidant rich wild blueberries which promote collagen production and are high in vitamin c, then moisturising honey and olive oil.
INGREDIENTS ( for 2 - 3 masks)
this is a rough estimate of ingredients as i always eye ball. you can add more or less of something to create your desired consistency! :)
- 2-3 tbsp organic blueberries - wild if possible!
- 2 tbsp organic full fat greek yogurt
- 2 tsp coconut kefir
- 1 tbsp organic olive oil - you could also use coconut or almond
- 2 tbsp of raw local honey - manuka is also great
add all ingredients to a bowl and mix, crushing the blueberries with a fork and making the mixture as smooth as possible (you may need to add a little more of something to make it your desired thickness or consistency). apply mask to a clean and exfoliated face, neck, décolletage and leave on for up to half an hour. rinse off with warm water, follow by massaging your favorite oil or moisturiser into your skin.
keep the leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days!
